How did you first get involved in home finance?

Sue: I started working for ANZ as a teller in 1992 after the birth of my 2nd baby, Dylan. I worked part-time in the Rundle Mall Branch, until I moved to the Westpac Mortgage Centre. I was employed in various roles until getting into the Third Party Broker Unit. I was there for 13 years until 2010, when I was made redundant and came to Bernie Lewis.

Eddie: Whilst working at Commonwealth Bank, a position in the branch came up as Loans Assistant and it was a great change from basic examiner/teller duties, so I went for it and enjoyed it.  I rose through the ranks there in many different roles. It all evolved from there until I accepted a redundancy and got into mortgage broking (pre-assessment mainly) at Assured Home Loans and then onto a role as a Full Assessment/Credit Officer at First Mac. Basically home finance has been 95% of my career.

As a one-time first home buyer, what would you say to your previous self?

Sue: Save more money!!! And when you refinance to a better rate, don’t increase your mortgage.

Eddie: I should have bought into the property market a lot earlier – there were some bargains around the place (in hindsight) but interest rates at the time were scary, so the approach softened.

What does your perfect day look like outside of the Adviser Support bubble?

Sue: Breakfast in bed, lunch at a beachside pub, walk the dog, dinner with my husband and 2 kids.

Eddie: Cruising, especially the Med (on a broad scale). Otherwise its either a walk on the beach with the wife, dining with wife and/or friends, a few coldies with mates at the pub, a day at soccer watching my beloved Croydon Kings, or an Esplanade ride on the Harley just to chill out.

Where is your favourite spot in all of South Australia and why?

Sue: My home, with both my adult children and husband, in the Bali hut by the pool.  I’m very much a family person, my adult children have flown the coop and I miss them immensely… So anywhere with them and my husband is my favorite place.

Eddie: SA has so many nice spots it’s hard to pick just one. The River (Mannum, Blanchetown), The South (Goolwa, Port Elliott), Yorke Peninsula (Port Hughes, Moonta Bay), but it’s also hard to go past more local spots such as Central Market, Henley Square, Glenelg, Brighton beach and the Rat & Parrot (Findon) pub of course!

What’s your go to money philosophy?

Sue: Unfortunately, it’s earn it, spend it!

Eddie: Get expert advice. It’s not a sin to not know every angle of finance and/or investing and how it will best work for you. Talk to the experts, and you’re sure to at least get best possible outcomes more often than not, as opposed to trying to work things out yourself. Apathy can be your worst enemy.

Why Bernie Lewis?

Sue: An ex-colleague recommended me to Bernie Lewis. I had an interview and the rest is history…. 8 years so far.  I love the people I work with, love what I do!!!

Eddie: Unique to SA, family owned business and great reputation. A great team is on board and all strive hard to get best possible outcomes for clients. It’s a pleasure to be part of a team that is so focused and have client’s best interests at heart.
